Report ‘Greenhouse horticulture without fossil energy’ available

The sector faces the major challenge to use significantly less fossil fuels over the coming years. But which routes are there for the different greenhouse cultivations? Researchers of the Wageningen University & Research and consultants of AAB conducted a research on fossil free growing for 6 different cultivations: tomato unexposed, tomato exposed, chrysanthemum, alstroemeria, warm potted plants and radish. The research was commissioned by the programme ‘Kas als Energiebron’.

It is possible to find fossil free scenarios for almost all cultivations in all regions. If in the coming years the prices for energy sources like gas and electricity will rise due market developments or due surcharges on the market price, money can be saved by switching to fossil free options. For all cultivations, except radish, investing in energy saving pays off. For each cultivation and each location customisation is needed and possible. This requires of the entrepreneurs an orientation of their own capabilities and options. The report leads the way.
